Football in Russia

Russia has a lot of football clubs that we all know. For example Zenit Saint Petersburg, who have won the Russian Premier League several times. Zenit is the club of goalie Aleksandr Kokorin, Joerie Zjirkov and former player Andrej Arsjavin.

The first division, called ‘Premjer Liga’, consists of 16 clubs. Because of the way the Russian league system is set up, a newly created team can enter the system and reach the Premier League in three years. Other well-known clubs are CSKA Moscow, that brought up former national team captain Igor Akinfejev, and FK Krasnodar. Russia was the host country of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
