The Virgil’s Legacy Trophy is more than a youth football tournament. Created to give the next generation of players an elite professional stage, the event brings together a carefully selected group of Europe’s leading football academies in Tilburg, the city where Virgil van Dijk’s own football journey began. The tournament is built around a clear ambition: to bridge the gap between academy football and the professional game, while creating meaningful experiences that can stay with young players throughout their development.
On 12 and 13 September, the second edition of the Virgil’s Legacy Trophy brought 16 U13 teams to Tilburg for two days of elite youth football. The invitation-only field featured AC Milan, Ajax Amsterdam, Arsenal FC, Celtic FC, Chelsea FC, FC Barcelona, FC Bayern München, FC Groningen, Feyenoord Rotterdam, Galatasaray SK, Juventus FC, Liverpool FC, Paris Saint-Germain, PSV Eindhoven, Southampton FC and hosts Willem II. With some of Europe’s most prestigious academies represented, the tournament offered a level of competition rarely seen at U13 level.
The first day took place at the Willem II Youth Academy, where the 16 teams were divided into four groups. Each team played three matches, with the results determining the fixtures and opponents for the second day. Every match brought a new challenge, as the young players tested themselves against some of the strongest opposition in European academy football.
The tournament then moved towards its most distinctive setting on the second day. The remaining matches were played at the Willem II Youth Academy before the competition reached its climax at the Koning Willem II Stadion. For the players involved in the final, walking through the tunnel and onto a professional stadium pitch provided a unique experience and brought one of the central ideas behind the Legacy Trophy to life: giving young players a genuine taste of the professional game.
The final saw FC Bayern München face FC Barcelona at the Koning Willem II Stadion. Bayern München produced a strong performance and secured a 3-1 victory to become the 2026 winners of the Virgil’s Legacy Trophy. One of the defining elements of the weekend was the presence of Virgil van Dijk himself. As the founder and driving force behind the Legacy Trophy, Virgil was present throughout the event and had the opportunity to meet the young players competing in the tournament. For the participants, being able to share the weekend with a player who has progressed from Tilburg to the highest level of world football added a personal and inspirational dimension to the experience. His presence also brought the story behind the tournament to life: creating a world-class starting point for the next generation, in the same city where his own journey began.
Virgil was joined throughout the weekend by other renowned names from the world of football, among them Steven Gerrard, Adebayo Akinfenwa and Frank Rijkaard. Their presence added another special dimension to the event and gave the young players the opportunity to meet and interact with figures who have experienced the highest levels of professional football.
